Mentally disturbed girl raped

AN 18-year-old mentally disturbed girl was raped in a white Toyota Quantum at Univille, Lenasia South, on Wednesday, February 10.

A passer-by saw movement in the vehicle and went to investigate. When he got closer he saw the half-naked suspect with the pupil.

“The girl is in a special needs school; it is clear that the man was taking advantage of her,” said Lenasia South SAPS communication officer Sergeant Khalipha Mvula.

When the suspect tried to confront the witness the girl managed to get away.

The witness went to the police station to inform them what was happening “When the police got to the scene they found the Quantum and two men assisting to push the vehicle because it was stuck in a pit,” said Mvula.

The perpetrator was arrested.

He appeared in court on Friday, February 12, and was refused bail.

A number of pupils who have special needs in the country have been raped because perpetrators take advantage of their condition.

In 2006, a similar case occurred when a 10-year-old pupil, now 20, who has cerebral palsy and a mental capacity of a 4-year-old, was found crying in a toilet at school. A teacher found her on the floor, sobbing “he touched my private parts”. Investigations confirmed she was raped – the culprit was a 15-year-old.

JISWA School for the disabled in a statement said, “Learners with mental disabilities are vulnerable, and are often taken advantage off”. The statement further urged parents to o be vigilant, supportive and must teach their children skills to prevent them from becoming victims of abuse.

Parents should not hesitate to report these sexual crime to the relevant authorities.
