According to those on scene, the Grade 5 boy had been playing with friends whilst awaiting his school transport outside the school. When the children spotted the truck which had been turning onto Flamingo Street they attempted to jump onto its trailer and the boy fell. It is alleged the truck drove over him.

The truck driver, completely oblivious to what had transpired continued driving, until he was flagged down by a motorist. He then walked back to the school to find out what had happened.

According to management at the school, children are at all times urged to await for their transports inside the school’s premises. A security guard is also stationed at the gate to keep an eye on pupils.

“Countless letters have been sent to parents so they could urge their children to stay inside the school and wait for their transportations, transport drivers, however, find it a hassle to fetch learners from inside, hence they wait outside,” a teacher who did not want to be named said.

The JMPD also does patrols every afternoon outside the school, however, they were not there.

The school had previously been rocked by the kidnapping and murder of 9-year-old Keketso Mahlakwana.
