Justice at last for Phiwayibona Dumakude

Family members together with friends of the late Phiwayibona Dumakude filled the Johannesburg High Court’s Courtroom 4C to its capacity. They wanted to see the face of the two suspects who murdered one of their own being sentenced.

Dumakude was shot and killed by his uncles on June 14, 2015, at the Dube Hostel.  Two years later, his killers were finally brought to book.

Qiniselihle Eric Danisa (55), was sentenced to 30 years behind bars and Maphutha Hendrick, was sentenced to 25 years imprisonment.

Johannesburg Central SAPS spokesperson Captain Mbele elaborated, “On June 14, 2015, at about 7pm, the two accused shot and killed Phiwayibona Dumakude (29).  Both the accused are uncles of the deceased. The shooting is alleged to be an act of revenge for the killing of Zamukuphila Danisa who was shot dead at the Diepkloof Hostel earlier on the same day. About eight people have died since the beginning of this family feud which emanated in Emsinga KZN.”

“Qiniselihle Eric Danisa was arrested on August 7, 2015, after a lengthy investigation while Maphutha Hendrick was arrested on August 9, 2015. Two unlicensed firearms were recovered from the bonnet of the vehicle belonging to Danisa. Both the suspects were arrested at their place of work in the Booysens area,” added Captain Mbele.

Police believe this sentence will send a strong message to the families and the community at large.

“It is a crime to take the law into one’s own hands. The conviction is the result of diligent work done by an investigating officer of the Meadowlands SAPS, who ensured that they gathered enough evidence,” said Captain Mbele.
