From the beautiful painting of Lenasia in last weeks issue we move on to other realities that are less flatering and more painful. Lenasia has been the ground that has housed and has nurtured many a generation. For us to flourish further we need to respect the fact that this land has to be taken care of. One of the monsters that lurk in the shadows is the litter. It has become almost a feature in Lenasia. As you drive or walk around, the streets are strewed with garbage. The lovely smells of home cooking is invaded by stench and filth. Is that how we would like to live?
Beautiful rose bushes that once served as hedges are replaced with paper and plastic. Trees that were planted in front of every home is smothered by smoke and smog. For those who live in Lenasia, please take a look around as you drive and notice the surroundings and how it has changed.
Lenasias lustre is fading. The place is beginning to look bleak and unhealthy.
What has happened to the vibrancy? What has happened to the upholding of cleanliness? What has happened to maintaining our love for the environment?
Are we as a community becoming complacent? Has the dirt around us become our new standard of living? Are we happy with our new look environment?
If we are happy then everything is okay. If we need to change the environmental conditions of where we live then we need to find solutions? We could moan and grumble about our situation or we could proactively do something constructive about the change we want to see.
One could argue that the responsibility lies with the government to maintain the litter problem. I would emphatically agree. Most certainly some pressure needs to be exerted on the various municipalities and councils concerned. However we as a community too have a responsibility to ourselves and to Lenasia to do something about the excess litter.
This is an appeal to all community members to put our thoughts together in order to find reasonable, constructive ways to combat the litter problem. To be aware and conscious of our everyday actions like throwing waste into the bin is one step to protecting our environment. In some way we owe it to the earth to protect her as she has always protected us.
As concerned, productive, thinking people we can find solutions to our lurking monster.
Please ponder over what you think or believe we can do together to clean up lenz
