Red ants evict illegal Univille land grabbers- Golden Highway blocked

The Red Ants and law enforcement agencies are currently evicting illegal land invaders at the Univille plots in Lenasia South.

The evictions come after hundreds of people began illegally occupying the land and erecting shacks.

According to Ward 122 councilor, Vinay Choonie, the piece of land on which the people had begun invading was earmarked for a housing development. He also said that some of those who had been invading the land were from as far as Midrand.

“It’s not just local people there, there are people who already have houses but are trying to steal land,” Choonie said.

He told the Rising Sun that some people are just being greedy and should go through the proper channels as millions of other South Africans.

“There are people who have been on waiting lists for years, but we don’t see them invading the land,” he said.

The occupiers, however, beg to differ, saying they cannot wait for the government to give them land when there already is land.

The Golden Highway has been affected and motorists are urged to use alternative routes.

On September 14, SAPS and JMPD officers were monitoring the area after hundreds of people invaded the vacant plots with digging spades, pickaxes and corrugated roofing sheets.
