Hluvukani Shiranda goes to Thailand

Maths is fun for Hluvukani Shirinda, from Flamingo Primary School joined Abacus Maths, Maths Concept Academy Branch based in Kagiso in April 2016.

Abacus Maths is offered as an extra mural activity. It brings a unique approach to understanding the language of Maths through tactile and interactive approach that allows learning of maths on many cognitive levels. It is based on similar programmes that are offered in countries such as Japan, China, Singapore, America and Taiwan. Hluvukani has shown interest in Maths since day one of joining the programme.

What sets Hluvukani apart from most of her peers is that she can calculate 50 sums mentally (multiplication, division, addition and subtraction) in TWO minutes or calculate 50 sums using an Abacus in 6 minutes.

She received her first trophy during the 6th Abacus Maths Championship Competition that took place in Randburg. After 5 months of joining Abacus Maths she qualified to compete internationally during the Abacus Maths Soroban Association Competition hosted at Hoerskool Rooderport. Hluvakani represented South Africa in the Global Association of Japanese Soroban Mental Arithmetic (GAJSMA) competition in Thailand on October 2.
