Ennerdale resident stoned in Thembelihle service delivey protest

Residents of the Thembelihle informal settlement once again took to the streets to voice their anger regarding service delivery in the area.

Protestors took to the streets from Monday, April 9 to Wednesday, April 11, burning tyres, placing rocks and boulders and strewing rubbish in a bid to blockade the roads.

It was reported that rubber bullets were used to disperse the crowds, who in turn pelted police with stones.

Motorists were urged to avoid the K43 and to use alternative routes.

Caught in the crossfire was a 25-year-old man, who has had to undergo plastic surgery to the mouth after a rock hit his face.

The man had been making his way home from work using the K43, when his car was stoned. The vehicle’s front and rear windscreens were shattered.

One of the rocks, hit the man in the face, resulting in him having to be hospitalised.

“My son said he was travelling from Eldorado Park to Ennerdale, when he came upon a mob which stoned his car. He turned in the direction of the police who had supposedly been monitoring the situation but they did nothing to help him,” the man’s mother said.

The man was told to drive to the hospital as police said there was nothing they could do. The furious mother questioned the safety of the people of South Africa, as well as police effectiveness.

“I will now have to fix the car, pay hospital bills, and pay for counselling, as my son is very traumatised. What are the authorities doing about this. It’s really not on,” she said.

The incident had many wondering whether some Thembelihle residents had been using the protests as a front for criminal activities.

While lenasia residents say they are ‘gatvol’ with all the protesting.
