City targets CBD- Achaar taken away

Community members have in the past complained about the deterioration and pollution of the Lenasia CBD. Others also raised issues ranging from non-compliances and violations of by-laws. It would seem their complaints did not fall into deaf ears.

On Thursday, May 10, Citizen Relationship Urban and Management (CRUM) together with Pikitup, JMPD, and Environmental Health undertook a joint operation.

They raided shops in the Lenasia CBD, confiscated goods from shops which did not comply with the rules and regulations. Hundreds of buckets of Achar were taken to the dumping site. Officials also stated that they are concerned about the breakout of listeriosis and they wanted to ensure that the safety of consumers is not compromised.
The officials also sent a stern warning to businesses who disregarded the law.
Speaking to the Rising Sun, Ntsako Mabasa, Deputy Director of CRUM said, “We have realised that the CBD’s are deteriorating.

The majority of them within region G are in the state of decline. And as the result we came to the CBD and did an assessment and we realised that the CBD is in a state of deterioration. Businesses are moving out of the area, crime is on the rise and slumlords are appearing.

We coordinated a joint operation with different departments. We also want to play our role in ensuring that the 5% increase that the mayor has spoken about is achieved.

We also want to make CBDs a place where investors can create a conducive environment. We are hitting some of the areas very hard by issuing fines, giving notices, impounding stuff so that we send a clear message that the city is serious about economic development. We are serious about safety but most importantly about service delivery,” he said
