Update: Ennerdale father released on warning

The Ennerdale father who shot his son after mistaking him for a hijacker at an Ennerdale school has been released on a warning at the Lenasia Magistrates’ Court earlier today.

The magistrate said the shooting is a tragedy that will haunt the accused, 50-year-old Sibusiso Emmanuel Tshabalala, and the rest of the family.

He is not required to post bail.

Tshabalala broke down in the courtroom and was comforted by his wife.

In the gallery, Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi was present.

Tshabalala shot his 16-year-old son, Luyanda, outside the Fred Norman Secondary School on Tuesday after mistaking him for a hijacker. Luyanda had been attending evening classes.
