Park primary School is hosting its 18th Annual Walk for Literacy on 2 September 2018 and this years walk has a ‘going green’ theme.
The going green concept means to pursue knowledge and practices that can lead to more environmentally friendly and ecologically responsible decisions and lifestyles which can help protect the environment and sustain its natural resources for current and future generations.
“As a school and educators it our responsibility to educate our youth on the importance of protecting our environment. We aim to cultivate learners who can help create a sustainable earth” , says Principal and founder of the Walk for Literacy- Mr. S. A. Khan. He added: “This is one of Park Primary School’s most anticipated event and is an appropriate platform for us to create the going green awareness not only to our learners but to the community at large.”
Miss Earth finalist Nazia Wadee will begin the 7km walk which is set to kick off from the school gates at 8 am.
The walk for literacy incorporates maintaining the importance of literacy in a child’s life. It challenges one to get out of their comfort zone and to participate in a 7km fun walk and is an opportunity for families to enjoy a fun-filled day in the company of friends, good food and entertainment. It is an initiative driven by Park Primary school over the past 18 years. With the continuous support of parents and the community of Lenasia, Park primary School is able to uphold and maintain the library resource and media centre which is the hub of the school where learners engage in a variety of reading material as well as e- learning resources.
This year, we will host a young, fun-loving and bubbly personality Stacey Fru as our guest speaker. Stacey is the youngest multiple awards winning writer of chapter books on the continent, if not the world. Her accolades include being the youngest founding member of the Wits University Centre for Multilingual Education and Literacy in 2016, Mail and Guardian’s top 200 young most influential South African 2017 and finalist for the “ Gauteng Premiers Women of Excellence Award” 2018 in the girl child category. We are excited to be partnering up with the Stacey Fru foundation where we will be doing a book collection drive on the day and all books collected will be handed over to the foundation that will distribute and donate it to underprivileged schools around Gauteng. We would like to encourage and invite people to be part of this book collection drive by donating second hand books which are in a good condition and the collection site on the day.
There is promised to be a whole host of fun for children of all ages. The mini-concert, planned and co-ordinated by the educators of Park is always delightful to watch. There will also be a live band present throughout the day.
All food stalls will be run by the school and the following items will be sold:
- Wors Rolls
- Vienna Rolls
- Cold Drinks
The school will also hire out stalls to parents and home industry owners to sell items on the day, at the cost of R250. Should you require a stall, kindly contact the school at 011 852-1512 to reserve a space.
